Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru were the two giant Congress leaders, whose attitude towards Muslims had a far-reaching effect on Hindu-Muslim relation in this country. Hindu-Muslim unity was one of the planks of Mahatma Gandhi for securing political freedom. But his endeavour for this unity was more a tactical move to secure political freedom from the British than a social movement for their emotional integration in Indian society. He tried to bridge the gap of mistrust between the two communities, which had started deepening with the status of separate electorates granted to Muslims under Lucknow Pact in 1916. He forced the Congress to join Muslims in Khilafat movement against the British but failed to get the confidence of the latter after the failure of the movement. India has lived over Sixty years under secular constitution but its Muslim population remained isolated from its political mainstream…..

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is a Muslim nationalist political party in India. The chief support base of the party falls inside northern and central Kerala. Please note that since the name ‘Indian Union Muslim League’ is registered at the Electoral Commission by a splinter-group of the party, the party contests elections as the ‘Muslim League Kerala State Committee’. IUML was formed with an object of achieving the constitutional rights of Muslims, other backward and minority people of India. Muslim League has been standing always for democracy and the integrity of the nation and its all round development and the League’s motto is secularism and communal harmony. League could uphold the sacredness of diversity of Indian life besides fighting for the existence and rights of the Muslim minority. This mission is responsible for making the League occupied a high position in the democratic system of the country.
